So, who are the photographers on Mastodon?
I left Twitter a few weeks ago after several decisions made by new ownership. It had played a declining role for me professionally but was still a place where I maintained some contacts and relationships.
I’ve joined Mastodon to reconnect with some of those folks and get a fresh start with a similar network.

Will I end up with a vibrant photography community there? I have no idea at all at this point, truthfully. But I figure it’s worth giving it a shot. Depending how it goes, I might blog more about it here, or create a video on YouTube.
Some photographers found Twitter dull. Others found a lot of benefit from it. As someone who has done a lot of photography work for clients in various tech sectors, many of “my people” were there, and I built and maintained those relationships through tweets. I wouldn’t have been there for fifteen years and 100,000+ tweets if I didn’t get value from the service.
Will I get the same value in connecting with photographers on Mastodon? It remains to be seen. The media capabilities of the service are similar to those of Twitter in that it’s generally a text-focused social network but you can attach photos. I don’t see this as a place where I’m likely to be exposed to a new audience that will hire me for client photography services, but rather another replace I can network with photographers to help them grow in the technical areas of our craft.
If you’re not already subscribed to my weekly newsletter, that would be a great way to find out how things go as I give Mastodon a whirl.
