It turns out you can mute stories on Instagram.
With the ever-increasing number of media formats in Instagram, I’ve found that there are some folks where I want to see their posts, but I don’t want to see their stories. I want to mute stories on Instagram for selected accounts.
Yesterday on Twitter, I commented that I wish I could see someone’s posts, but not their stories.
It turns out you can do what I want. You can only see someone’s posts, or only see their stories. The secret lies in muting the thing you don’t want to see. Thanks to Bryan Beel for helping me find the settings I needed.
To get to the options for either seeing (or not seeing) a given account’s stories and/or posts, go to the profile of the account in question.
Click on the Following button:
Then click Mute:
Finally, select the option to mute stories, posts, or both. In this screenshot, I’ve chosen to mute this person’s stories:
According to this help page, if you mute stories on Instagram for a person, their stories:
- Will appear at the end of the bar at the top of feed
- Won’t have a colorful ring around them when they’re updated
- Won’t automatically play when you watch stories
It’s a good way to follow someone’s Instagram posts to see their photos, but not see their stories which I often find are very disconnected from the photography that someone shares. If you want to follow on Instagram but not see their stories (or the opposite and only seen their Instagram stories), the above settings will make that work.
