What is an OptinMonster and why do you care?
I’ve mentioned a few times that email marketing is one of the least-used but most valuable marketing options for photographers. If you’re not yet doing email marketing, check out my guide to get started with email marketing for photographers.
In addition to having an email list, you’ll need to get people onto said list. Intelligent optin forms on your website are a great way to do this, and I want to highlight a few features inOptinMonster, one of the best tools for smart integration between your website and email list. If you looked at OptinMonster months or years ago, you may have missed some of these… the product team is doing a great job at continuing to add features to the service.
Disclaimer: OptinMonster is an affiliate partner; registering for their service through a link in this article results in a small commission for me.
Yes / No Popups
Instead of a popup asking directly for someone’s email address, create one that makes an offer and then gives visitors the option to say Yes or No… if they say No, they go on their way. If they say Yes, you present a special offer or optin for their interests. They’re already invested and interested. What if you asked…
- Do you want to have a social media avatar with impact?
- Do you want a free guide to dressing for your business portrait?
- Want to know how to get senior portraits that both please your mother and are ones you won’t find embarrassing?
We’re all familiar with membership websites – where you have to create an account on the website in order to view articles or access features. While you can implement a membership system on your website, this is often a very timely, complicated, and expensive process. What if you could write great articles, that you make available for free, but you “lock” the best parts of the article away unless someone joins your email list?
That’s the Content Lock feature of OptinMonster. It’s not a full membership website system, but you can hide parts of articles until someone opts into your list.
I use the content lock feature here on TechPhotoGuy.com on a couple articles. One example is my email marketing starter article.
What happens right after someone chooses to join your list? What if you could present them with something else helpful? Like a free download, or a call to action to “Like” your Facebook page? That’s a Success option, and it’s built into OptinMonster.
Are you offering a special time-sensitive deal for your clients? Perhaps you want them to book their holiday portraits by a deadline, or you’re trying to get a bunch of mini sessions filled I’m a timely manner? Some of the templates allow for a countdown timer, to help incentivize folks to register or take action. We know that deadlines drive decisions, so this makes it easy for you to present those deadlines to your web visitors in a nice-looking way.
Plenty of Design Templates
One of my favorite features of the system is that they have a great designer that doesn’t require writing custom code. Change text, colors, graphics, and the like without having to touch any CSS or other code files. My strength is photography, not web design, so I’m happy to use their system to build interfaces for subscription that look like they were built by someone who has far more design sense than I do. Want the colors of the optin box to match your website and brand? It’s easy to do that.
All the “Regular” Stuff as Well
I’ve highlighted some newer features, but OptinMonster also handles the normal duties for an email optin system. You can build optin boxes to place below your articles, in your sidebar, or elsewhere on your website. You can design popup windows that appear automatically, or when a user clicks a link to subscribe. It’s all customizable, and it integrates with all of the popular email list providers: MailChimp, Constant Contact, ConvertKit, and more.
How OptinMonster Works
OptinMonster is a service that integrates with your website to present the optin or offer to your site’s visitor based on the configuration you choose. It can show the offer immediately, after a time delay, only at certain locations in your website, or only when a visitor is leaving your site using something they call Exit Intent. If you have a website that allows for customization and insertion of code, you can use OptinMonster.
